Nov 3-4 Willow
Springs Open Track sponsored by
Jim Saxton 626 285-2024. West Coast
Racing invites you to run all makes & models at speed on the Willow Springs
road course in Rosamond, just north of Lancaster. Jim and Cherie Saxton host both Pantera and Ferrari clubs for
this two day event twice a year. TPOC helps
registration Saturday as a fundraiser.
So, bring your car and experience the fastest track in the west (often
the site of new car testing as seen on Speed TV). The cars are divided into 4 classes based on your skill level
from pro to novice (instructors provided) and car preparation. Or, come and make the TPOC treasury grow by
helping with the registration and enjoy watching some very fast, expensive cars
race. Be sure to offer a ride to the
guy holding a helmet labeled with “ROD”.
Nov 14 TPOC Mtg 7PM Mimi’s 18461 Brookhurst & Ellis FV. Bring your best
Leaky Exhaust Tech session on March 10, 2007
was to get another Pantera on the road once again. Patricia McWalters’ 72 is a daily driver whose exhaust fumes had
rendered it unusable with the windows down.
She loves driving it and offers proof by displaying over 100K miles on
its clock. This pre-L also has a real
clock mounted between the tach and speedo.
The smoking problem had plagued her mechanic for some time without
resolution and so a simple call for a tech session was issued.
The gang gathered after the normal Saturday Donut
Derelicts meeting to locate and eliminate the leak. A few minutes with the car confirmed that the situation is
unbearable. Fumes coming from the left
bank showed us where to concentrate our efforts. Up and down on the lift was the norm as we removed the
headers. Examination of the header
gasket showed us healthy leaks from two cylinders but there were no leaks at
the tail pipe. Encouraged, we ordered
up a thicker exhaust gasket while the crew feasted on croissant cold cuts and
salad at Phyllis’ table. A lengthy
lunch insured plenty of bench racing and “normal” conversations.
Reassembly took two attempts cause I forgot to lineup the tail pipe
into the collector the first time. I’m
glad it’s my lift or the team would surely fire me. Relief came to us as we fired up the engine but it quickly
dissipated as we discovered another leak at the center of the bundle of pipes
into the collector. Sometimes finding
an answer doesn’t mean it is the complete answer. Our dismay continued with the realization that although we have
the tig welder needed to do the repair (less the foot pedal), we don’t have the
skill needed to make the repair. And
so, we had to send Patricia home with instructions to find a professional to
seal the leaking collector.
Members present lending a hand or encouragement were
Dave Rudderow, Bob Singer, Bill Wright, Art Stephens, Ron Huff, Gayle Huff,
Phyllis Kunishige and me.
Contact me if you can donate a left 4V header to
Patricia or if you have welding skills needed to do quality repairs. Rod Kunishige 714 374-8177 3/25/07.
21 Members attended the last
meeting. Will you make it 22 next time?
